01 / FIND THE SIGNALTHE RESEARCH SIDE

Before the noise.
Find the note.

A cultural icon. A new film. A crowded social landscape.

Working on behalf of Compelling Pictures, in tandem with Sony Pictures and TriStar Pictures, John brought research, reporting and design together to support the film’s social campaign launch.

The first move: study how other music biopics travelled. Translate the trailer numbers into a clear picture of the conversation—then turn that context into creative work.

REPORTED VIDEO VIEWS / MILLIONS

Historical report snapshots. Timing, posting age and account coverage differ; these are contextual benchmarks, not a controlled ranking. YouTube compares the main US studio channels: 21 days for IWDWS, 28 days for the other films. TikTok compares Sony’s US account with Baz Luhrmann’s account; absent posts are shown as N/A.

02 / GIVE IT FORMTHE DESIGN SIDE

Make every
impression sing.

The insight matters. So does the way it lands.

Original campaign designs by John Darko: review-led artwork, filmmaker recognition and awards-season moments, each built to carry the film’s story into the feed.

02 / THE AMPLIFICATIONCULTURE CARRIES THE CONVERSATION

Turn up
the conversation.

A powerful story travels further when people get behind it.

We worked with celebrities to help spread awareness of the film, bringing their voices and audiences into the campaign. That support helped extend the conversation and contributed to the overall numbers.

The campaign archive includes support from Babyface, Viola Davis and Kim Kardashian, captured in these original social designs.

Celebrity support formed part of the wider awareness effort. The archived report does not isolate its share of the reported views.

03 / SEND IT OUTTHE RELEASE SIDE

From the report.
Into the world.

Research to reporting. Reporting to release.

The work moved between analysis and execution: making the numbers understandable, designing the campaign’s visual moments and preparing assets for release.
